Human Trafficking Task Force Presents 2016 Annual Report

(COLUMBIA, S.C.) - January 5, 2017 Attorney General Alan Wilson today announced the release of the 2016 Human Trafficking Task Force Annual Report.

Each year, the annual report details data and successes from the previous year, and outlines goals and objectives for the upcoming year.

Some of the 2016 findings include:

  • In 2016, there were 50 charges of Trafficking in Persons closed in the State courts.
  • Of the 50 cases, 36 of those charges involved victims under the age of 18 years of age.
  • Currently, 28 charges are pending in the State courts with 22 involving minor victims.

The report is produced annually by the Task Force and submitted to the governor and legislative leaders as required by state law.

“January is national Human Trafficking Awareness Month,” Attorney General Wilson said. “There is no better way to kick off a new year than by looking at the progress we’ve made, but also focusing on our goals for the upcoming year. The more we learn about the scope of human trafficking in South Carolina, the better equipped we are to attack it. I am proud of the Task Force and their continued work to eradicate this crime in our state.”
