Attorney General Alan Wilson announces South Carolina Human Trafficking Task Force receives first financial allocation from the General Assembly

(COLUMBIA, S.C.) – Attorney General Alan Wilson announces that the South Carolina Human Trafficking Task Force met today and announced its first financial allocation from the General Assembly. As the State Task Force reached its 10th Anniversary, the financial support from the state Legislature positions the Task Force to initiate the next steps of its strategic plan. These efforts will address both sex and labor trafficking throughout South Carolina.

“The Human Trafficking Task Force has come so far since its inception ten years ago and this financial commitment from the General Assembly will help it continue and expand its vital work to fight this growing crime,” Attorney General Wilson said.

“We are pleased that the legislature granted our request to expand our work across the state and continue to support law enforcement, educators, healthcare, and others active in the anti-human trafficking efforts,” said Kathryn Moorehead, Director of the State Task Force. “It’s a momentous achievement for our state as we can now formalize sector-specific training, data collection, and prevention education.”

The South Carolina Office of the Attorney General will add Task Force staff to help support regional task force efforts, increase public awareness, and aid in meeting the needs of victims and survivors. The allocations will also assist in providing prevention education in high schools and other youth-serving agencies, develop an online training hub, roll out the direct service provider certifications, and launch a higher education initiative to prevent sex trafficking on campuses across the state. Additionally, the office will increase awareness of human trafficking’s intersection with other crimes such as domestic violence, sexual assault, teen dating violence, and stalking.
