(COLUMBIA, S.C.) – Attorney General Alan Wilson made the following statement regarding the recent Supreme Court ruling on race-based voting lines:
“Last week, in Louisiana v. Callais, the United States Supreme Court handed down one of the most consequential decisions regarding voting rights in a generation. That decision embraced a position I advocated for in the case and have long advocated for in other contexts: that race-based decision-making is wrong and unconstitutional.
That decision plainly provides a basis for South Carolina to review and to redraw our congressional districts. To be unequivocally clear: I fully support President Trump’s call to redistrict prior to the primary election and believe our General Assembly has the legal authority to do so. I urge our legislative leaders to act swiftly and thoughtfully to approve new South Carolina congressional maps.”
