(COLUMBIA, S.C.) – South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson and state and international leaders met with state university officials Monday to discuss how to combat antisemitism on college campuses.
“The rise in antisemitism in America since the October 7th attacks has been appalling. Being able to meet with the families and victims of the Nova music festival while in Israel this spring was a powerful experience that I knew needed to be shared,” Attorney General Wilson said. “I am grateful for the partnership with the Israel Consul General's Office and the Combat Antisemitism Movement for the opportunity to spend the day discussing how to combat antisemitism on campus with leaders in education and bring the October 7th movie to South Carolina. While seeing this footage may make some uncomfortable, we should all be uncomfortable with what we're seeing unfold across our country.”
There have been incidents at major U.S. universities where Jewish students have been attacked and beaten, while others have been spit on and threatened. Many Jewish students say they don’t feel safe on their campuses.
The summit included break-out sessions to discuss specifics on topics like, “How Universities and Faculty Can Protect Jewish Students,” and “Student and Parent Experiences on Campus Since October 7th.”
Governor Henry McMaster, state Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver, and Consul General of Israel to the Southeastern United States Anat Sultan-Dadon also spoke at the summit.
After a series of opening statements that were open to the media and public, the summit continued in private, to encourage better participation and a free exchange of opinions and ideas.
The group also toured the Anne Frank Center at USC, which brings to life the story of the young girl whose diary has touched the lives of millions. The Center seeks to encourage people not to be bystanders but to stand up against antisemitism, bigotry, and inequality.
The summit concluded with a private showing of video footage of the Hamas attack on October 7th.
