Attorney General Alan Wilson announces Chapin man sentenced to prison for stealing from his mother in a nursing home

(COLUMBIA, S.C.) – South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced that on September 13, 2022, David Gregory Crider, 50 years old, of Chapin, SC, pleaded guilty in Lexington County to Exploitation of a Vulnerable Adult {43-35-0085 (D)}. Crider was sentenced to five years in prison, suspended to three years in prison at the South Carolina Department of Corrections, and an additional five years of probation. Crider was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $84,684.81.

A South Carolina Medicaid Fraud Control Unit investigation revealed that, between the dates of October 1, 2021 and March 15, 2022, Crider used his position as ‘power of attorney’ to steal $84,684.81 from his mother, who, during the time of the alleged misconduct, was a resident of a Lexington County nursing facility. As such, she is considered a vulnerable adult under South Carolina law. Crider admitted to investigators that he spent a large portion of the stolen money on gambling and illegal drugs. 

Pursuant to federal regulations, the SCMFCU has authority over Medicaid provider fraud; abuse and neglect of Medicaid beneficiaries in any setting; and the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of individuals residing in assisted living facilities or nursing homes. 

The SCMFCU receives 75 percent of its funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under a grant award totaling $1,927,636 for Federal fiscal year 2022. The remaining 25 percent, totaling $642,544 for FY 2022, is funded by South Carolina.
