(COLUMBIA, S.C.) – South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced he is co-leading a 24-state brief asking the D.C. District Court to lift its injunction against deploying the National Guard to Washington, D.C.
“As an almost 30-year veteran of the National Guard, I am proud to be leading the charge on this issue and supporting President Trump’s effort to keep our nation’s Capital safe,” Attorney General Wilson said. “The previous administration’s soft-on-crime and open-border policies have threatened the safety of our citizens and, unfortunately, led to an attack on two fellow Guard members. What the President is doing is under his authority and the right thing to do to end lawlessness in our Capital.”
Attorney General Wilson also co-led a friend-of-the-court brief in September supporting President Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to D.C. The D.C. District Court enjoined the deployment, and this coalition of attorneys general is asking for a stay while they appeal the decision.
Their argument is simple: President Trump’s efforts to make the District of Columbia safer are lawful, and the states have an interest in the case because their citizens travel to D.C. to visit the sights and petition their government. Some of the states that joined the brief have also sent their own National Guard troops to D.C. to advance President Trump’s mission to make the District safer.
Attorney General Wilson is co-leading this brief with West Virginia. Joining them are the attorneys general of Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah.
