(COLUMBIA, S.C.) – Attorney General Alan Wilson announced today that the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has dismissed an appeal brought by suspected members of the violent Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, who were trying to avoid removal from the United States by the Trump administration.
In January, Attorney General Wilson led a 24-state friend-of-the-court brief supporting President Trump’s authority to remove members of a foreign gang from the United States. The brief argued that the power to remove noncitizens under the Alien Enemies Act rests within the President’s national security responsibilities.
“Gangs like Tren de Aragua have unleashed horrific violence on communities across the country,” Attorney General Wilson stated. “This is a major victory and I applaud the President’s quick action to secure our borders and ensure citizens in every corner of the country are protected.”
Attorney General Wilson also previously supported the protection of the President’s constitutional authority by co-leading a coalition of 27 attorneys general. You can read more about that here.
