(COLUMBIA, S.C.) – South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson made the following statement after the Federal Communications Commission today proposed new rules to allow local and state prisons to jam contraband cell phone signals.
“We’re pleased that the FCC agreed with the letter we joined and moved forward with introducing the proposed rule. This is something I’ve fought for for years because criminals behind bars are using contraband cell phones to order hits, intimidate witnesses, and continue committing other crimes. I’m thankful for the administration’s leadership to move this forward and allow state prisons to do what federal prisons have been allowed to do for years.”
The FCC rule has not been adopted yet and still must go through a public comment period, followed by time for the FCC to respond.
