Berkeley County Sheriff's Office Makes Third Child Porn Arrest in Three Weeks

Hanahan, S.C. Man Arrested on Eight Counts

(COLUMBIA, S.C. – November 5, 2012) South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced the arrest of Danael Theran-Gonzalez (DOB: 07/16/1989), a Colombian national living in Hanahan, S.C., on eight (8) counts involving the sexual exploitation of a minor.  The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, a member of the Attorney General's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, made the arrest on November 1, 2012.

On September 23, 2012, a Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office undercover detective downloaded four files containing child pornography from a shared folder on Theran-Gonzalez's computer.  Authorities later executed a search warrant at Theran-Gonzalez’s residence, and he admitted downloading files containing child pornography.

Two desktop computers, a digital camera, cellular telephones and several items of digital storage media were seized from the residence.  A preliminary forensic preview of Theran-Gonzalez’s computer revealed at least ten (10) computer files depicting children 6-8 years of age engaged in sexual acts with adults.

Theran-Gonzalez was arrested and charged with four (4) counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor second degree (§16-15-405), a felony offense punishable by two to ten (2 to 10) years imprisonment on each count, and four (4) counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor third degree (§16-15-410), a felony offense punishable by up to ten (10) years imprisonment on each count.

Theran-Gonzalez was assigned a surety bond of $80,000, was ordered to surrender his passport and placed under house arrest, and was ordered to have no contact with children under the age of 17; no electronic communications devices (cell phones, computing devices, etc.) other than a landline telephone; no Internet use; was restricted from schools, malls and child playgrounds; and must not reside closer than one mile of a school.

The case will be prosecuted by the Attorney General's Office.

Attorney General Wilson stressed all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in a court of law.
